Top Texas Allergens & Your Home’s Air

Sneezing. Sniffling. You know the drill.

Yep, it’s springtime in Texas, and some of the biggest allergic offenders are floating around in your home’s air. Texans know that big city living also means rather sneezy living; those trees might be pretty to look at this time of year, but we’re no strangers to the misery that comes with each and every bloom. We’re here to break down the top allergens in the DFW metroplex and how you can find relief with Reliant Air Conditioning.

Offender # 1: Tree Pollen

Last year’s map of overall pollen nationwide. Thanks, but no thanks.

Fewer allergens are as prevalent and visible than good old-fashioned tree pollen. It’s on your car. It’s on your clothes. It’s quite literally everywhere in your life for several months, causing itching and irritation at every turn. Pollen from oak and ash trees is especially problematic in our neck of the woods, causing not only seasonal allergies but asthma flare-ups and a very yellow metroplex.

Perhaps the only good news is that if you can see it, you can (somewhat) wash it away. Take a water hose to the areas in and around your home where tree pollen has settled, especially when it comes to high-traffic walkways and other areas that result in higher quantities of this mega-allergen from getting tracked inside your home. It also helps to take off your shoes before walking inside your house. Watch your furry friends, however. Pets tend to bring the outdoors inside, and this might mean it’s bathtime for Fido when the tree pollen is at its worst.

Offender # 2: Your Lawn

Summer forecast – mow, sneeze, repeat.

Eventually, the trees will calm down and we can say goodbye to the yellow haze. But wait – there’s more.

Grass allergy season tends to start as soon as tree pollen season subsides. Perhaps it’s a cruel joke from nature itself, but that gorgeous Bermuda grass thriving in your yard means lots of allergic particles in your air. Often called “hay fever”, grass allergies tend to last from spring until fall – just in time for the ragweed to kick in. If you’re noticing a pattern, allergies are really a year-round concern for many Texans. Keep reading, as we’ll get to our solution shortly.

Offender # 3: “Cedar Fever”

The juniperus ashei, or mountain cedar. Somebody pass the tissues.

The cause of this absolute utter state of desperation actually isn’t cedar at all – it’s a type of juniper, commonly referred to as mountain cedar – that plagues Central Texas. You don’t have to travel far south to find this sneezy scourge, either. (Our apologies to our neighbors in Austin. You guys are usually in the hot zone.) Signs that Cedar Fever season has arrived begin to manifest themselves in the early spring. They sometimes begin as early as January and can continue for several miserable months. The windier the weather, the worse the season; pollen granules can travel hundreds of miles under the right conditions, causing lots of citizens to scramble to the nearest pharmacy for relief.

Offender # 4: Mold

Mold is one of the worst in-home allergens of them all.

April showers bring higher mold counts, both outdoors and indoors. Mold can also be the most dangerous of the bunch. It can be found lurking inside in places where moisture tends to get trapped, and spring and summer conditions allow for your home to become the perfect petri dish for this sometimes toxic monster. The worst part? Mold allergies tend to peak in the spring alongside the pollen, meaning your suffering could be caused from both. If that doesn’t want to make you stay in bed during the beautiful weather, we don’t know what does.
